One weekend in Chinatown

07/18/2006 | One weekend in Chinatown

Here is one of the main gates to Chinatown in Yokohama, which is really quite large. Yokohama is one of my favorite places in Japan and in the summer people dress in kimono to celebrate the various Tanabata festivals. It felt funny to see people wearing traditional Japanese clothing in Chinatown of all places and it reminded me of Japan's brutal colonization of China in World War II during which it would have been perfectly normal to see people wearing kimonos in summer. I still wanted to get some shots though.
